Feedback… yikes. The word ‘feedback’ gets a bad rap! Mostly because people don’t know how to properly give or receive it. Yet, it is so important to the success of any organization, team or individual. Feedback is critical because it gives us an outside perspective on how we perform, interact and, most critically, how our work impacts the bigger picture.
How to do it well:
Understand there are 2 types of feedback – technical (better presentation skills, updated processes, speed, etc.) and interpersonal (conflict management, communication, passivity, etc). It is important that you give them both with clarity.
Delivery The key here is to have no judgement. People do things well and they do them poorly, it’s your job to not judge their flaws just highlight them with emotional neutrality so that they can grow. No one wants to do a bad job; they just don’t know how to do better sometimes.
Match your emotions to your message Be enthusiastic about positive feedback and be serious about negative feedback. Don’t try to hide your emotions over important issues or the message will get lost.
Choose your words thoughtfully People hear differently so pick words that will resonate with them for both the positive and the negative.
Jump into 2023 and set the record straight by giving your team members the feedback they need to effectively chart the course in the year ahead.
